External HDD OS?

Can an external HDD be loaded with an operating system, booted such that it can then read the internal HDD?

Ideally a sound YES with a description of how it can be done would be very much appreciated.

Not sure (sorry).

But you could use a removable hdd.

Sorry, the answer is no.

"Windows (all versions) must have its boot files installed to the first physical hard disk on a computer system, and those boot files *must* lie
within the first 8,192 MB (8 GB) of that first physical disk in order for Windows to boot. For Windows NT 4.0, make those numbers read 2,048 MB (2GB). Therefore, no, you cannot do what you propose."
