External HDD

I have a PC with both USB1 & firewire connections and want to add an external HDD to store and play Train sim files. Would it better to go for the firewire option or USB?

Firewire is the fastest.
If you can find a firewire ext HDD or Firewire Caddy.
Useful too if you have no other Firewire devices, frees up a USB port.

If you only have usb1 on your PC then you can add USB2 with a PCI card for approx £10.

USB2 connection on the drive will make the drive more versatile if it can be connected to other PCs

Go for Firewire.

The data trasfer rate an external hard drive is capable of far outstrips the performance of USB1.

Since you want to use the external drive for running programs you really need the extra performance of the Firewire connection
