Hi, I have just bought a Western Digital My Book External Hard Drive.
It has 320Gb of space.
I am about to install it.
What should I format it to! FAT32 or NTFS ?
What are the benefits and negatives of both?
Many Thanks
Fatbelly

Hi, assuming you are using XP - NTFS without a doubt.

Yes I am using XP.
I have clicked on format and it is offering me NTFS.
Below that are two check boxes one saying 'quick format' and the other 'enable compression'.
Should I check either of these boxes?

Quick format is all that is needed.

NTFS
Advantage = a better more efficenet file system. handles large file sizes over 4G
Disadvantage = cannot be read by older windows versions 95 98 or DOS

Fat 32
Advantage = can be read by all op systems
Disadvantage = cannot handle files over 4G, less efficient use of disk space.
