External HD defrag

My external HD, which is normally well-behaved, now refuses to defrag: it won't even complete prescan. It claims that a file, folder or directory called FOUND.000 is corrupt,but XP search can't locate the offending object. Although the drive stiil has acres of space available it would be a relief to solve this problem before defrag is really needed. Disk check was no use either.

You will need to untick Hide protected operating system files in Windows Explorer [tools - folder options - view. The FOUND.OOO files are the fragments of damaged files found by
CHKDSK. Search again and delete them, its perfectly safe.

When you do find the file [files, there could be more than one] and you click delete you might get the old “access denied” message. If you do you will have to take ownership of the file. Right-click it and click properties. Click the security tab and click advanced. You can then take control of the file from the owner tab. You don’t say whether you use XP Pro or Home. For the security tab to appear in a Pro system, you will need to disable simple file sharing For Home you will have to restart in safe mode and logon as
