I have various backup provision myself, including an external HDD in a caddy...

I'm in the process of helping/advising a colleague with a purchase...

Can anyone advise the pros/cons, comparing;

purpose bulit external HD.

HD in an external caddy.

both being USB. Thanks in anticipation,

The caddy is the better option for two reasons:

1. Internal drives to fit are cheaper.
2. You can swap drives in the caddy thereby being able to use seperate drives for backup if you have more than one hdd.

Any opposing views?

Some external drives are annoyingly noisy, I would suggest that you or your colleague try some out for yourselves or obtain recommendations. I have one that I use as little as possible.

I use ordinary bog-standard IDE hard drives to back up two computers.

I bought this unit, which will also handle 2.5 inch (laptop?) hard drives and also CD/DVD drives.

Works great.
