In the last couple of days my external hard drive has (& is right now as I type) started 'churning' away like clockwork literally.

It is spot on to the second like a clock ticking but obviously replaced by the noise a hard drive makes with the occasional longer 'churn/grind' then returning to it's clockwork routine.

Apart from anything else it is driving me mad.

Any ideas folks?

Back up important files and look to replace.

Can I view what is running on my external hard drive at all?

tap the casing lightly a couple of times.
if it stops or changes pitch its probably fluff or dirt in the fan.
mine has made a frightfull raquet since new until it' warms up or i tap it to quieten it down............
it's worth a try

Yes sorry it does work but the downloaded prog does not tell me anything relevant. It does not see the external drive at all.
