External hard drive stalls when opening video file

Have a Buffalo Drivestation 500gb with a 2.0 usb connection. Works fine with a lap top but when using on my home PC it stalls when opening video files. I go to Task Manager and the file / folder is 'not responding'. The CPU usage has spiked at 100% - no idea if that's relevant.

Please advise - much appreciated

Is your home PC USB2 or USB1, that would make a difference.

Does the home PC have sufficient RAM?

PC has 512 mb RAM though I am planning to update it to 1gb. How do I know if my PC is 2.0 USB or the old type. Thanks

have a look in device manager, under usb there should be an entry for usb enhanced controller if it's 2.0

Thanks

I will check tonight when I get home.
What happens if it isn't 2.0?
Can I change it?
Does that explain why it opens word files fine then stalls with larger files?

If you don't see the word enhanced as per keef66's entry, then you have only USB1. Assuming you know how to get to Device Manager.

It is easy to make it USB by adding a pci card with USB2 sockets on.

I will check all that and get back to you all -

many thanks

Right click My Computer, manage, device manager.

In device manager, underneath the USB Controllers, it says 'Standard Enhanced PCI to USB host controller' followed by other USB controllers but none of the others say enhanced.
