External hard drive - Fat32 or NTFS?

I bought a new external HD recently, and used Acronis to back up an image to it. I noticed that the 60gb backup is split into 4gb chunks, which I assume is because it is formatted FAT32?

What is the max file size for NTFS, and is it OK to format the external HD in this way. I.e I wont mess it up (obviously the reformat will wipe my backup)

Please advise

It's generally regarded as best to file in NTFS unless you are using an operating system older than XP. click here

I run Vista, and I am never likely to dual boot with older systems, so NTFS looks a likely candidate. thanks
