external hard drive download problems

I have a WD, My Passport Essentials 500gb hard drive. When My wife & I bought an HP laptop each, I used the external hard drive to make a back-up of both laptops, something I saw in a magazine in case of future problems. recently I decided to use the hard drive to back-up my photo's so possible free up space on my laptops internal hard drive. When I connected the WD to my laptop nothing happened, I went to "my computer" but the WD did not show up. Also I have not been able to see what was on the WD either, nothing shows. Any ideas anyone please.?

Have you tried Google for an answer, it might be a little quicker. I have just put in a search, and a number of possible solutions to the problem appeared. To many to link here.

If Windows 8.1 right click the start icon bottom left on your desktop and select Disk Management. Check if it has a drive letter. If not right click the drive and select Change drive letter and paths. Allot it a letter. I usually use the lower end of the alphabet.
