External Hard Drive - Double Usb Lead - Why?

Okay I have a 2.5 mobile external hard drive... But why on earth does it have 2 usb leads?

Does it matter if I only use one?

Assuming it's USB, the maximum current available per USB port is 500mA. The current consumption of the drive could quite easily exceed that so, by using 2 USB ports, the current obtainable is one amp.

If you only use one USB cable, you may find the drive does not work or (worse) that you damage the USB port on your computer.

Also be careful which ports you plug into, the 500mA can actually apply to two ports (often next to each other)
