external hard drive clicking

  Hucky 17:12 17 Aug 2009

hi every time i boot up my external hard drive it clicks 12 times and then stops and i cannot see the drive in my computer i have only had it 8 months... it`s a verbatim 640gb thanx

If it clicks your HDD might fail at any moment. Backup all your data, just to be safe. I had the same problem but only my clicking was from the PSU. Since yours is an extral hard drive it does not have a PSU. What Operating System are booting up on the HDD. How is it connected to your computer. USB. Is it a 32bit Operating System. Please Reply.

As Hucky can not see the drive they are going to have difficulty backing it up.

If you have a back up of the data on the drive then destroying the drive and getting a replacement is in order.

If you have not backed up the data on the drive, firstly take a bollocking :o) and secondly if it is irreplaceable then do not try to start the drive again, get it to a data recovery company to look at.

Everytime you try and fire up the drive it could be doing irreparable damage to the platters loosing your data for ever.
