Is it good practice that is mains powered rather than USB powered. Mine would be driven from a laptop USB if not mains driven. Thanks David

Use Mains Powered.

depends what you want it for mains powered ex hard drive is no good if your laptop is out and about, usb would certainly drain a laptop power and would need additional batteries if used where there is no electrical supply.

In general mains powered is thee best option for an external drive.

if the external cas contains a 3.5 inch HDD it will need mains power, a 2.5 inch laptop drive will not.

Howerevr i you want a large capacity drive then you will have to get a 3.5 inch drive.

The problem with an USB port is, it wont give enough current to drive the externals. Could also burn out the USB internal circuits in the laptop.

Thanks for your helpful replies, it seems like it is better that the External HD is mains powered. David
