External Hard Drive

I'm going to get an external HDD sometime in the next couple of months. But I have seen kits that you can put a HD in, which have fans built in to them. As shallow as this sounds, i simply dont like the look of them. So, my question is is it just as well to find 1 i like and will it over heat if it doesnt have a fan in it?

Sorry i havent put this very well but what are your experiences? Any comments you have on the subject of external hard drives generally would be great.

Hi, I have two external hard drives, they each have their own fan built-in. No overheating problems at all. Neither of my drives are kits.

PS, I would not advise running a hard drive with no fan.

for that. what are they? Who are they by?

One is a Seagate 320Gb - just under £80 from PCW, the other is 160Gb Eye-T, both USB and both 7200rpm.

Many thanks!

Your welcome - both run almost silent (unless I am going deaf), and main use, is for full backup using Acronis True Image.

Have a look at the 'ICY BOX'

I use 2 of them and can put any internal drive, up to 250 GB, in them and swap drives at will. No fan and mine are in constant use with no overheating problems. Much cheaper than buying a dedicated ext drive.

Incidentally, do most externals come with fans, as when ive browsed them on the net, ive seldom, if ever, noticed a fan in the spec list...?

Fans - I don't know about 'most' external drives, but both of mine have internal fans.
This is my Seagate ... look at the further details -

I paid less than £80 from PCW.
