External hard-drive

This is probably a very naive question but am thinking of buying an external hard drive purely to use for storing business work and was wondering whether the drive has to be kept connected at all times to the computer.

The reason being is that I do not wish other members of the family to easily access this drive so was wondering whether I could safely keep it unplugged until needed - similar to my external dvd writer.

Before you buy an External Hard Drive.

Have a wee scout around and see how many MBs you wish to store.

A couple of the, so called, USB Pen Drives may suit you better, and be easier to carry/hide, if you only talking in MBs rather than GBs.
