External Drive capacity

I am running Windows Vista and using an external Seagate drive for back up but the last back up failed due to lack of space. I checked the Computer/Properties and that gave 70Gb free and 232Gb in use but when I add the individual file sizes they only come to about 2Gb. Can anyone tell me where the resr of the space has gone?

Your question is not quite clear - but, when I make a full backup, using Acronis, of my 160Gb C: with 53Gb used, the backup file is approx 37Gb.

2Gb ???

when I check Computer \ J: which is my external drive and go to Properties it says that there is 232 Gb of space used but when I check each individual folder the total comes to about 2 Gb leaving 230 Gb unaccounted for. My Documents file is 42Gb. Why the apparent loss?

When you right-click on J: icon in My Computer, then click on Explore, what do you see?

10 Folders.Sizes
6.09m, 563m, 82.3m, 551m, 813k, 70.5k, 44g,

The 44gb has a name MIKE-PC, not sure what it is.
