external aerial

I have a Netgear DG834G v3 wireless router, at the moment this is hard wired into my 2 computers in my playroom upstairs, I am thinking of moving the router downstairs to connect into the main BT box and do away with my telephone extension leads. I would like to use a separate aerial with a bit of gain to get the best out of it, but I have no idea where I connect the aerial, do I just pull the small aerial out of the back of the router and reconnect a new aerial into the same place, or is there another way of adding the aerial. Any help would be appreciated.

Most external upgrade antennae have a coaxial lead fitted to them to allow for better positioning.

OK, so do I just pull the small aerial out of the back of the router and replace it with the new one.

Unscrew the small aerial and screw in the new one.
