Windows XP Pro, 1024 M ram, 80GB hard drive (7200)

Recently, my computer has been running very slow, although I cannot recall having made any significant changes.
Programmes take a long time to open, and sometimes the mouse feels "sticky" (not dirt).
The Task Manager shows constantly high CPU usage 70-100%, most of it under "system" process). What progrmmes hog this "system" process.

Just be aware that some 16 bit apps used to show as high CPU useage. For example, with soem mouse drivers you could monitor CPU useage and when you click the mouse button it jumped to 100%.

Don't believe everything you see and keep your system antivirus up to date!

Must be one hell of a program, to hog that system.

You'll have to tell us the processes?

Just list them...

Try running disk defragmenter and scandisk.

The only process which is hogging the CPU usage is "system"
