Excel and a numerical column

  swapper 12:14 19 Mar 2008

I am using excel, one of my columns consist entirely of telephone numbers i.e. 01234 123456, I have noticed that many of the groups are slightly longer than others.
Even the same number entered twice can be of a different length.

Any idea how I can make them appear in a neat column please, i.e not slightly staggered.
I have aligned left but to no avail.

Probably nothing to do with your problem but worth a look.click here

highlight the column and make sure all the cells have the same formatting, font size, etc

The main problem is that you have a number which starts with a zero, so that zero will vanish as soon as you close the cell - also large numbers get converted to exponential form i.e. 7.9E+09.

To overcome both these problems, either you can insert blank spaces (i.e. 0208 1234 5678) or you need to set up you cell as a <text> cell.

Or Format > Cells > Special > Phone Number.

Is that a new thing in Excel 2007? I ain't got it in 2003.

I have the option here with Excel 2000. I'll have to check XL2007 when I get home.

It only appears in Excel 2003 if you select USA as location

Oh. I'm sticking to English (UK) and have virtually excluded all English (US) from my machine!

So that's why I don't see it.

And don't the Americans have a different phone number format to us?

Just had an experiment and found that system.

Trouble is that the UK has so many different ways of doing phone numbers with our 'crazy' prefixes and variable length numbers that I can't get any of them to fit into the American methodology!

Thanks everyone, I first tried - Format > Cells > Special > Phone Number - and got a result.

thank you again.
