excel; if cell empty copy from cell above?

I'm working with the output from a database which ends up as an excel sheet.
At the moment it puts the details of where a record came from on the first line only, even if the result is multiple lines.

Is there a formula I can paste into all cells so that if a cell is empty it will display the contents of the cell above it?

Similar to Noldi's method:

Select the column of record numbers

Press F5

Click Special, tick Blanks, click OK

Type =

Press the Up arrow.

Press CTRL + Enter.
