Excel and Formatting Dates

Forgotten how to format dates in excel so they accumulate down the column.

e.g. has to be like this down the column

1st January 1950, 1st February 1951, 1st March 1950 .... 1st January 2006


help much appreciated.

Should it be 1st March 1952? If so:

Tools > Add-ins, make sure Analysis Toolpack is ticked.

With the first date in A1 enter in A2

=EDATE(A1,13)

and copy down as far as needed. Select Column A, Format > Cells and set to display as you wish.

Is that a correct 1st February 1951? or should that have read 1950.

Do you mean how each date appears, e.g. as 1st January 1950 instead of, say, 1/1/50 ?

If that is your question...

Select the cells you want to format, selct format from the menu, choose, "Cells" then the "Number" tab...

If there isn't a suitable format in the "Date" section then choose "custom" from the bottom of the options...

In the "type" box put "d mmmm yyyy", (without the quotes)

Note that this will give, for example;

1 January 1950

NOT

1st January 1950

The "st", (of 1st,) and "nd", (of 2nd), and "rd" etc, will be missing. I'm not sure how to get those!
