I'm using excel 2007. until today no problem with data entry.
Now when i enter something such as 3/4 and return instead of getting 0.75 I get 3/4 or the date.
The sheet format is set to general. If I select the cell and check its format its at custom. If I change it back to general for that cell and re enter the 3/4 it still comes up as 3/4 and the fomatting is again at custom.

does anyone know whats going on here, i'd be obliged for some advice.

With Excel 2007 there are some issues with fonts resetting unexpectedly and so on but I don't think that is your issue.

If you enter 3/4 in just about any version of Excel that will be interpreted as a date. Instead enter

=3/4

and you should get 0.75 unless you have formatted the cell as Text.
