I have spreadsheets with firstnames & lastnames in one coloumn & would like to convert them to separte coloumns.Anyone know a formula to do it.
Assuming the first name appears in A1In B1, type =LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1)) to produce the first nameIn C1, type =MID(A1,FIND(" ",A1)+1,20) to produce the last name
nosharpeTried that & worked ok on 1st line. When copied down showed results from 1st line in subsequent rows.
nosharpeFound the errorHad automatic calculation turned off.
SorrySo pleased at finding answer to the error forgot to sayA Big Thank You
Without a formula: make sure there is a blank column to the right of your column of names. Select your column of names > Data > Text to Columns, select Delimited and specify Space as the delimiter then press Finish.
Alternative formulasB1 =LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1)-1) (this avoids a trailing space)C1 =RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND(" ",A1))
