I am just using excel to do my accounts and I have one column down into which I put the amount going out.But now when I enter the sum and click onto the next column the amount I have just entered changed to a date format.When I clear that column and re-enter the amount the same thing happens again it changes to a date format.Does anyone know what I have done wrong.I have been doing my accounts this way for years and this has only started last week.Can anyone help.

If you select the column / cells in question and right click and choose 'format cells' you will be able to select 'number' from the tabs and then 'number' again from the list. This will set it as required, you can then change the number of decimal places etc.

Its probably because this cell / column had a date in it previously that it defaulted to 'date'.

Click on the column header, Format > Cells and format as currency.
