My guess the best solution is to use the top row (row 1) for your column 'headings'.
Then you can go to 'Tools->Options->View' and de-select "Row and Column Headings". This will unfortunately turn off the row number labels as well.
If you want to reference your columns, then you can 'Insert->Name->Define'. Here you can attach a name to a cell range reference. You could reference the name "Fred" to the whole column (=Sheet1!$A:$A), or to (=Sheet1!$A$2:$A$50) so that your column heading IS NOT included in your named range.
