Hi, i have a 250gb Maxtor external hard drive and for some reason that i cant understand sometimes my laptop recognises it and other times it doesn't! About 3 weeks ago it was seeing it and i was using it, then i plugged in my 500gb external hard drive which it recognised but then when i plugged the 250gb h.d in the latop just wont see it!! Please please has anyone any ideas?
Thank you in advance!!

It's either the Cable or the Caddy Electronics by the sounds of it thats faulty

Something you could try if the drives are removable from the caddy's is take the 250 out and fit it in the 500 caddy to test the drive

Swap them round if you want to test the other caddy

As it is a laptop, perhaps the USB ports are not quite powerful enough, perhaps the answer would be a Powered USB Hub.

Hi, im still not having any luck with my Maxtor 250gb external hard drive, just a thought- could i 'break' the hard drive out of the casing and then plug it in using a Sata lead that i have?
Here is a pic of the casing/the hard drive:

You should be able to but the Caddy may not work after. The drive should be a Standard drive
