* in Escel

I have a spreadsheet with some cells containing *. If I do find * and replace with nothing it clears the whole sheet. How do I get rid of * without having to do them 1 by 1? Thanks.

Excel uses * as its wildcard character, hence the problem. This can be avoided if you put a ~ before it in the find box. So find and replace ~* will only replace instances of *.

Would that be true of other MS programs or is it just an Excel trick?

As far as I know the problem only comes about in Excel. I tried Word and Access and edit/replace with a * changes only the *'s, it (the *) doesnt seem to act as a wildcard in the same way in those programs. Honestly cant comment about any other MS software other than those.
