eSata

Basic question, I am not familiar with eSata. I want to use an eSata external drive on my HP laptop which has an eSata connector. Presently I use USB external HDs, what do I need for eSata, is it an external eSata drive just or do I need an enclosure. Not sure what an enclosure is exactly, does it just adapt an external type eSata drive to external for connection to the port or what. Thanks
