Error message on startup

  madrid 15:25 22 Feb 2004

Each time the computer starts an error message appears as follows:- An exception ocurred while trying to run cmicufg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd. A click on OK removes message and all appears to run afterwards - it's just annoying. Message under heading App name rundll32.exe
Windows XP Home running and there's possible connection with Dragon Naturally Speaking and USB mike - the problem seems to have occurred after these loaded. Have tried uninstalling Per Sono software for the mike, but no difference. Also sfc\ scannow tried - again with no result.
Any ideas anyone?

Looks like it's going to be a proccess of elimination if you go to start>run>type msconfig and go to the start tab and uncheck each app and reboot each time till you find the culprit or it my be apparent looking at the list.

Thanks -tried this and first startup item listed was Run Dll32cmicnfg. After disabling,no error message on reboot but System configuration message said system started in Selective Mode - go to General Tab and restore normal mode and undo changes made. Of course the message reappears when this done.
Utility shows Location of file as HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version.
Any further ideas?

cmicufg.cpl is for c-media audio configuration.

Thanks - I rather thought it might have something to do with that. Is an updated driver likely to resolve the problem?

Possibly. It's likely your onboard sound. Find out the model of your motherboard, go to their website and look for any new downloads for the c-media drivers.

If you don't actually use the c-media audio configuration (to change settings etc presumably), you can untick the item in msconfig startup. The sound will still work.
