error 768 line 5067 in setup.c

Hi everyone! Anyone help with this? Am trying to upgrade from Win98 to XP. Installation starts o.k. but just after the re-boot, when it should start copying files I get Error 768 line 5076 in d:\nt\base\boot\setup\setup.c

I am assuming this refers to a piece of C source code, probably stored in a ramdisk built by the Setup program.

Microsoft say they have no reference of this.
When I "Press any key to continue..." I get a blue screen with the info/advice:
Windows has been stopped to protect your computer.
Check your hard drives for corruption. Run chkdsk /f to resolve the problem. Then re-boot.

This is daft, as, with Windows stopped, I have no way to run any program, cannot get to the command prompt. Can only re-boot. Setup re-starts with the same result! Any help Grreatly appreciated.

I have tried going back to Win98 and running Scandisk, which reports no errors found. My HDDs are not SCSI so it's not a termination problem.

If you have Go Back installed try disabling it first.
