erasing all ard disk content prior to installing n

I run an ageing PC on Win98 and have bought a new machine. I have backed up all my files and downloaded programmes to CDRWs. All other programmes are on OEM discs. I hope to sell the old PC or give it to a useful cause. How do I go about clearing the old pc's hard drive of everything?

I know this is basic but the last time I did it was using DOS and Deltree. I guess there is a better way? Where does FDISK fit the picture?

Better late than never. Thanks, very helpful. New PC up and running, old files etc transferred OK, so now to clean up!
