eMail scan - Avira etc

Was on XP with AVG 8.5 as anti virus. Now with W7 using Avira in view of negative comments here re AVG 9. AVG auto scanned e mails, but I an not sure if Avira (free) does. Any views? Should I revert to AVG 9 (using PC Tools firewall, and have SAS and Malawarebytes). I tried MS Security Essentials on XP, but a friend thought it not as searching as Avira. . Anyway I would be grateful for views re live checking of e Mails by any of the above anti virus free programmes, particularly Avira as that is my current programme.

Any Views?

avira free doesn't scan incoming e-mail, though the extremely competent active shield should catch any nefarious activity from toxic attachments. If you want something free that'll check incoming and outgoing e-mails without going back to AVG there are two options:-

Thanks, Belatucadrus and Marg7 for your views. I will look at Avast, but seem to recall some people om the forum with problems on W7 with it. I will re look.
