Email problem with £ sign

Can anyone help. Whenever I send an email via Outlook Express every instance of a pound sign (£) in the message transposes to a question mark when the email is received

This is a common problem and (I think) is dependent on the way the recipient has his computer set up.

What I do is always use the term "pounds Sterling" and not the "£" symbol. Likewise with the "$" becomes (country) dollars and "€" sign becomes Euros if the email is going abroad.

I had a similar problem some years ago when we were using Lotus Notes at work. In some cases the message would be truncated to the first occurrence of a £ sign.

My workaround was similar to €dstowe's - I used GBP instead of £.
