Email attachments from Vista to XP

Please can anyone shed any light on a problem we've got with email attachments?
We can open attachments easily on our new Vista pc. but when we write a document on it, using Word in MS Office Home, and attach it to an outgoing email, my brother is unable to open it on his 2-year-old XP pc. It says it doesn't know what format to open the file in. His ISP is AOL and he has Word on the XP pc, which hasn't had a problem like this before. Could it be a setting on the new Vista pc that needs to be altered?
Many thanks.

Maybe you have Word 2007 and he has an earlier version. If so you can either

Use Save As and save the file in Word 97-2003 (.doc) format

get him to install this click here

Spot on, VoG! This has worked a treat. Thank you very very much indeed.
