EISA configeration

  atch 15:24 13 Feb 2011

can anyone advise me on how to correct a portable hard drive which seems to have changed itself to an EISA drive and am now unable to access it in XP or Vista.

It won't have 'changed itself'

Tell us the history of the drive.
An EISA partition is usually FAT and part of the Dell recovery proceedure. It usually is a very small partition. (Note I said 'usually')
Have you looked in Disk Management to see how the Drive is divided up? is there any Unallocated Space for instance?

EISA partition is basically a Recovery partition setup by the company in your hard disk, so you can run the partition without using any boot disk. Many think that if they format the computer they can rid of the partition but tell you what the format will only help to clean up your other drives not removing the EISA partition as the EISA partition is not an active partition in your hard drive.

To get rid
# Go to start -> Run
# Type on the run window " cmd.exe "
# The command prompt window will appear; in that write "Diskpart" (you can write directly "diskpart" in the run window).
# A window will open. In that type "list disk".
# You will see a list of disks you are using most probably if you using one disk (hard drive) it will show disk 0. Your portable as disk 1
# Then type "select disk 1".
# Then "list partition".
# It will show the partitions of the hard drive you are using.
# Then see the type of the partition, in one of them there will be written EISA configuration ( or something like that).
# Select the partition as "select partition (partition number 0, 1, 2 ...).
# When you selected the EISA partition.
# Type "automount enable".
# It will show a message that the partition is enabled.
# Then exit the window and restart your laptop.
