Edit recorded DVD-R?

I have recorded a film with my home Panasonic Dvd recorder, but could not start it it at the very beginning of the film ( adverts thrown in when least expected!).
I know that I can send it to my Pc and begin a new project to enable me to author and edit the film. However, this will take as long as the original film took to re-do this, and I am wondering if there is a freebie out there to edit this DVD-R disc.
I have not much hope, since looking at various forums and other techie issues, it looks as if I may have to use the long ( and wasteful ) procedure.
Any hope?

Thanks, johnnyrocker,it's just that i am lazy, really!
But of course, there's the waste unless I use it as is, and put up with the unwanted material.
Thanks again,

It would'nt take 5 mins to edit out the commercials using dvd shrink then the only time would be burning to a dvd which would need nothing other than waitingand that would not be as long as the film
