E-mails won`t display properly

I run Win XP Home with IE8.I can receive e-mails in the normal way but when I click an e-mail in my Inbox to read it it displays a window for less than half a second then disappears before anything can be read.I suspected a virus but nothing untoward was revealed by my security software so I am at a loss what to do now. This has only happened recently but if it is something I have done to upset it I am puzzled as to what it might be. All suggestions very welcome.

More information needed - how are you receiving emails? Are you using webmail or do you use an email client - such as Outlook or Windows Mail etc. And who is your mail service provider?

I run Outlook Express via Microsoft Mail Server.

You don't have any message/s stuck in the Outbox do you? Could cause this behaviour.

Try going onto your Mail Server - and if any messages waiting to be downloaded open to read each of them - then close and open OE - download those same messages. With any luck they might then open OK.

If no luck with that then open Run command - WinKey+R - and type in

sfc /scannow (note space after sfc)

then OK. It will probably ask you to insert your OS disk
