E-mail or virus?

  Jomi 16:30 30 May 2003

in my OE6 inbox is a newly arrived e-mail from "[email protected]" after some of the postings that I've read here, I'm very suspicious.
Should I open it or just delete it?

As soon as I highlight the e-mail, it will be previewed in the bottom half of the screen, is that likely to be dangerous?
If it is, how can I prevent it from being previewed?

Delete it!

The mail is not actually from Microsoft Microsoft is a frequent target of virus writers, who often disguise viruses and other attacks as messages or bulletins from Microsoft tech support.

The company's official policy is that it does not distribute any software using email, preferring to use CDs or its website to dispense new software and software updates.

While the company does email customers, it does not send attachments and authenticates all messages with a digital signature

To prevent the preview pane from opening go to 'view' > 'Layout and uncheck 'show preview pane'.
From memory it is the attachment which is the problem, but it does no harm to be cautious.
