e-mail from Microsoft - is it legitimate?

I just received an e-mail which appears to come from Microsoft Public Support entitled 'Security Update'. It's about all the latest security updates for Outlook etc and has three files attached including a text file.

I am very suspicious because I didn't know Microsoft actually sent this sort of thing to individuals by e-mail. My virus checker hasn't flagged up a problem but can anyone tell me if this is safe, and if so, why isn't it simply included in the normal automatic updates which notify me regularly? Is it different in some way?

No it's not legitimate. Check out the Microsoft Knowledgebase

You are right to be suspicious.

Personally I would not open the email. Deleting it would be the best course of action IMO.

Thanks all for the advice. Files and e-mail duly consigned to history!
