So did you tell your graphics card you wanted to use two monitors?

Rightclick on a blank part of desktop and choose NVIDA Control Panel.

it does not give me the option to select two monitors, when i click detect nothing happens.

If they are plugged in and switched on and still NVIDIA Control Panel does not see them or is able to Detect them, Have you tried a different cable to connect with? and also have you reinstalled the Graphics card driver? Also have a look in Device Manager for any yellow triangles with ! mark.

I just had a thought, maybe you have to use the monitor settings (on the monitor NOT via pc). Look on your monitor for the menu button and see if you have to set it to HDMI.

I agree, seem to have ruled out any other possibilities, must be a faulty one.
