DVD's To HDD 'Legally'

Hi,I'm looking for a method of getting all my dvd's onto a external hdd,Then connecting the external hdd to my laptop to enable me to watch the dvd on the television.
As we all know that the collection of dvd mount up over the years and take up room so if i can find a legal way of doing the above via some bought software,I could then put all the dvd's in a box and store them out of sight.Of course the viewing of the dvd's will only be for private use only.Thinking of getting a large capacity hdd maybe a 1tb.What would be the best software to purchase to complete the task ?.How may dvd's would i be able to get on the 1tb hdd?.
