DVD's corrupted when burning at x 16 speed

I am using Vista to copy onto DVD's and the disks I am using are x 16 Speed. Nearly all of them are corrupted in one way or another. When I used X 8 speed in the past I had no problems. Is there a way of selecting a slower speed when recording so I can get more reliable results.I have read other comments that people select x 8 speed. But I can't find any adjustmets in Vista.
