DVD/CD drive does not work anymore

My DVD/CD drive on my laptop is dead. Can I boot my laptop and use the recovery CD on an EXTERNAL DVD/CD drive or should I replace the internal one?

try reloading any nero/INCD or similar software, that worked for me recently.

Much less hassle to replace your internal drive.

Trying to boot etc from an external CD Drive may present all sorts of problems, especially if your laptop happens to be Fuji and your external drive is something other than Fuji - that is just a 'for instance' sample.

If it still won't work, they are cheap enough to replace.

I can't load any software onto the computer with the DEVD/CD drive, but oddly enough I can play my videos films with it. Yes, Technotiger, it is a Fuji and thanks for the tip. Unless I am mistaken, I guess you all agree that I should play it safe and simply replace the internal drive and not to fuss with an external drive. Thanks for your help everyone.

Have you tried a lens cleaner disk on it?

Worth a try.

Fingees has a good point!
