My Mat*!@:a UJ-811 drive has started refusing to burn any cd's but will still burn dvd's. it comes up with this error 'power calibration error' every time no matter what cd-rs i use. Any Ideas would be appreciated as i have a multivision laptop and they've gone bust!!

i've tried a few different brands of cd still no different its weird that it still burns dvds though isn't it!
not sure who to email as its made by matshita who i think are something to do with panasonic. The disks i was using were iomega, cheap but i had burnt 25+ disks before i had this problem then overnight it just decided not to give up on burning cds altogether. thanks for the help mate at least i have some idea what the error means now!!

g390bpr it still may be worth trying other brands, just in case.also try a lens cleaner.

i have an old combo drive that still reads dvds fine but wont read any cdrom, but it can still burn them it is very fussy when it comes to media.i purchased a new cd writer and kept the combo for dvds.

yes matshita is panasonic.

if its still under warranty replace it if different media or lens cleaner doesnt do the trick.if its out of warranty a firmware upgrade may improve handling of certain brands of cd disc try click here

actually forget the firmware update.had a check on the above link and the only one available for uj811 is for nec laptop drives.wouldnt risk it.

Can i just send it back to panasonic/matshita also would it be difficult to take out of my laptop i've never done anything like that b4! also looking hopeful on the multivision front looks like someones bought them so i may still have a warranty through them!

Have you tried removing the CD-DVD Drive from Device Manager then restart your computer and retry a CDR

  hugh-265156 15:38 05 Mar 2004

as woodchip above says, sometimes uninstalling the drive and restarting the computer and letting windows re install it again helps.

use a standard cd lens cleaner.from any music store or electrical outlet etc.
