DVD writer won't write

Hi can anyone offer advice. I am trying to copy a dvd using a NEC DVDRW9 and maxell DVD+RW discs. All i get is an error message asking me to insert a blank or rewritable DVD 9.
Is the drive busted (its new) or am i trying to use the wrong discs?

You may be doing something wrong... try creating a data disk to see if it works ok.

DVD shrink may also help make the DVD small enough to burn to a regular disk.

(1) did you select dvd5 in your burning soft such as Nero becuase RW is dvd5 (not dvd9) disc

(2) did you try to put too much stuff to it

Hi, thanks for the advice, yes i can copy data, hve just used it to copy some old PDF files and workd OK.
Not sure what you mean by shrink? How do I do this and will I then be able to watch DVD on TV?
What is DVD9/5? What is the difference? I am using sonic and cant find any mention of that on the software.
Fianlly how do I check to see if I am trying to stuff too much onto the disc?
Thanks for the help - this is the first PC i have had with a recordable disc!

If you are trying to copy a copyrighted dvd, Nero will refuse to burn it.

The details of DVD5 and DVD9 are in the link that I posted - under technical details.

I see you are using sonic, but i'm pretty sure that the same applies.
