DVD RW stopped working

The DVD RW [Sony DVD RW DW-G120A] supplied with my PC has suddenly stopped working after 2 years or so trouble free service. I have followed Microsoft's hardware troubleshooter advice, and also done a system restore, to no effect.
I run XP Home, SP2. Device manager says "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

Could it be my device has just died, or might there be a way to revive it?

If you go into device manager,(control panel>system>hardware >device manager)and click on ide ata/atapi you will see primary ide channel ,open this up and click advanced settings ,see if ultra dma mode is showing if not click on the box showing and choose dma mode if available, you can also trouble shoot from the general tab.You can as a last resort uninstall the primary ide channel reboot and your windows should find it on reboot and reinstall it,hope this helps a little

Or this if you're not keen on editing the registry.

Look for "Restore Missing CD Drive" on that page
