DVD-ROM not recognising DVD's

I am very new to these devices and it's probably
a miss understanding on my part.
I recently purchased and installed a DVD writer
in my Windows XP Pro PC.
The device was advertised as a bare device, so
came with no software. It also boasts support for
multiple DVD-ROM and CD-ROM formats (-R/RW, +R/RW, etc.,).
I have been writing CD-ROM's using Windows XP's
writing capabilities but when I put a writable
DVD in the new drive its recognised as a CD-ROM.
Device manager correctly identifies the writer as
Is it the case that I need software before I can
write to this device?

whats the dvd-rw make and model? and what programs you using to try an burn your dvds? as nero6 and nti6 support both cdr and dvd-rw for burning,,,i myself have a dvd-rw that came with software but didnt install as Nero was old version to mine and Sonic dvd was only trail...im guessing that your burning software needs updating to support dvd format..and if playback of dvd film dosnt work try click here for starters

Thanks for all you help. I think my problem is that I need to buy some sofware for burning DVD's.
The device plays movies OK.

your welcome,what software have you currently got installed?? as u can try nero 6 ultra free click here and at least you can burn a dvd just to rest your mind and see it work(if your question is answerd please tick -resolved-
