DVD problem

My new Asus DVD/RW has been giving me a problem and by a process of elimination I have found that it apparently doesn't like working with another optical on the same cable. I have a CD/RW as slave.
I have a 40pin RAID ATA connection on the mobo that I am not using so I am wondering if I can use that for a single optical unit and run the other off the normal secondary IDE.
Anyone know if that is a big No No ?

Run one drive as a slave to your HDD and the other as a Master on the remaining IDE connection

Quack.
Unfortunately no spare slave spaces on hard drives.

I had the exact same problem with an optorite dvd rw drive, Point blank refused to work in any way, shape or form. Solution: An £8 pci ide expansion card, works a charm.
