DVD player won't play PC-produced DVDs

I recently bought a Panasonic DVD recorder - DMRES10 - but it won't play the DVDs, SVCDs or video CDs I record on the PC, using either Adobe Encore or Pinnacle. The discs will play on several very cheap players, owned by friends. Should my recorder play these discs ... or how can I find out it they should?
The recorder records TV programmes to DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM, and these all play back perfectly.

Depends on the encoding I suppose. But according to above site I think it should

Probably won't I'm afraid

My Panasonic is just the same. I've got a cheap player to sort the problem
