Dvd drive reads DVDs but not CDs

  taffy101 18:32 08 Dec 2006

I have a laptop on which the CD/DVD drive has not worked for some time, even after trying various things and even reinstalling windows. I have been managing with an external unit as quotes to have a new Drive fitted were quite high. Recently however a friend suggested reinstalling the Drive and IDE controllers. After doing this the drive will read DVDs but will still not recognise CDs at all. How can this be? I would have thought that if the drive can read DVDs it should read CDs too!. Any help would be appreciated>

CD laser or alignment dead.

DVD drives have two lasers or one laser aligned in two ways.
One for CDs other for DVDs

Thanks for that. I guess I will have to continue using my external drive for CDs. As a further point if I needed to reinstall Windows XP is it possible to do this from a DVD holding the operating system, or could I reinstall from the external drive?

Yes should be possible to make a bootable DVD with XP on.

Unless your achne suppors boot from USB then will not install from external drive.
