DVD drive now a cd drive ?

My 6 month old PC has the following specs. I recently bought the NEC DVD-RW from a good mate of mine and it works just fine. Or did until yesterday!

For some reason it has decided it is now a CD drive and won't allow me to burn DVD. I have gone through the suggestions posted on various threads (it seems to be a pretty common problem), but nothing seems to work.

I am looking at doing a complete format of my C drive, but I just want to ensure there is nothing else to do before doing it. I have tried several restore points, but the PC won't allow me to restore.

Did you try the 'uninstall from device manager' option?

p.s. xp build 2600 is a pirated copy, either you didn't know that you've had a pirated copy installed or your best keeping it to yourself in future

Here's another one, uninstall the ide channel the drive sits to and reboot, just incase the ide channel drivers are corrupt in some way.

that should read 'the drive sits on and reboot'
